Are you a senior in high school and are beginning to think about attending Virginia colleges? There are many fine colleges and universities in the beautiful state of Virginia, and they offer some of the best education available anywhere. Whether you want to major in health sciences, liberal arts or engineering, you are sure to find the right Virginia college that will meet your needs.

Virginia schools must be doing something right, because Virginia students routinely score higher than students from almost every other state. Education has a rich history in the state of Virginia, and that means students are more than adequately prepared to meet the rigorous standards of higher education.

If you haven’t even begun to consider the many fine Virginia colleges that are available, here are some tips that might help you narrow down your choices. Decide if you want to go to a large college or a small one. The size of the campus can have a profound effect on the experiences of students. Some people love the hustle and bustle of a large campus, and relish the constant vibe that is usually present. Others, however, prefer a quieter and more sedate campus that is more conducive to independent study. Luckily, Virginia colleges offer both of these experiences, so no matter what need in campus size you will be able to find it.

When you consider Virginia colleges, you will also want to consider if you will be transferring after you complete your studies. Some students go on for their graduate degrees, and if that is something you are considering you will want to make sure the Virginia colleges you are thinking about attending offer transfer credits. Most colleges do, even online schools, but it never hurts to ask. The more you know, the better your education experience will be.

Commonwealth of Virginia is responsible of managing and running Virginia Lottery (also known as Virginia State Lottery). The concept of a government-run lottery emerged in this state in 1987 when majority of state residents voted in its favor. This is among those 43 well-popular lotteries in United States that offer tickets to Mega Millions. This lottery is also listed among top 44 lotteries in the country that offer Powerball.

$437 million was funded by this lottery in 2007 to K-12 public schools of the state. Virginia State Lottery has gained a total of $7.55 billion from its inception in 1989 to last year June 2010. The lottery is very active in promoting its gambling activities and spends around $24 million every year for this purpose. The information technology area of this lottery was recently sold to GTECH, a well-popular company (internationally) that manages several lotteries worldwide.

Local retailers are the best point of purchasing its lottery tickets because the tickets can’t be sold by Lottery directly from headquarters. The law also prohibits the Lottery selling tickets online. Winning tickets can’t be cashed out by people under 18 because law prohibits them playing lottery. Lottery tickets are sold for cash only as credit cards are not acceptable by law.

Pick 3, Cash 5 and Pick 4, are the games included in Virginia Lottery. Each game has its draw twice a day. The lottery also has numerous scratch card games. Another popular game is Decades of Dollars that is played on weekly basis and its draw comes every Monday. Mega Millions is of course the most popular game of this lottery which has two draws weekly i.e. Fridays and Tuesdays.

Powerball is also equally famous as Mega Millions and can be played twice a week as it is drawn on Saturdays and Wednesdays. The integrity of games is protected through keeping up highly crafted security measures by state management. The winners of Virginia Lottery (that play and win Decades of Dollars, Mega Millions or Powerball games) are given a choice of annuity or cash.

The state of Virginia is called the ‘Mother of Presidents’ as eight American presidents were born in this state. Jamestown, once the capital of Virginia was founded in 1607 and it is here the English settled permanently for the first time on American soil. It is here that slavery was first introduced in 1619 and both American Revolution and the Civil War ended here. Virginia history plays an important role in the history of America.

Virginia history tells us the state has another nickname The Old Dominion and the name Virginia was given in honor of the Virgin Queen’ Elizabeth of England. Richmond is the capital of Virginia and the people of Virginia are known as Virginians’. The states symbols are as follows: flower (American dogwood), bird (cardinal), dog (American foxhound), tree (dogwood) and shell (oyster shell).

Virginia history has it that tobacco was the cause of rising plantation owners and introduction of black slaves in the 17th century; and the Great Awakening of the 19th century led to a more democratic uprising. Soon the tobacco industry fell, slaves were given freedom and by the 20th century Virginia was a devastated state.

Virginia history changed and it rose again after the Second World War and ever since never looked back. The thriving industries of the state are less agricultural and more high-tech. Highly educated people work in different sectors like defense, education, technical, and many organizations associated with the central federal government.

Places of historic interest in Virginia are Monticello, the home of Americas third president Thomas Jefferson; Shirley plantation; Mt. Vernon; Virginia Museum of Natural History; Black Soldiers Memorial; George Washington’s birthplace national monument; and the Gillfield Baptist Church (one of the only two oldest black churches in America).

Virginia history is long and filled with different cultural invasions besides the indigenous people who were there before the arrival of the English. The history relates stories of wars, battles, skirmishes, economic lavishness, downfall of the occupiers and the rise of a new era.
